BUSINESS TIMELINE & KEY MILESTONES

1. PRE-2013 : FROM CO-OP TO OCEAN PRIDE OWNERSHIP: Originally, the seafood processing facility at North Lake operated as North Lake Fisheries Co‑operative. In 2008, Ocean Pride Fisheries (based in Nova Scotia) acquired this struggling plant, aiming to enhance profitability, extend the processing season, and diversify product offerings.

2. 2013: ACQUSITION BY RED CHAMBER AND NAME CHANGE: In 2013, the plant was acquired by Red Chamber. Following the acquisition, the business was rebranded as North Lake Fisheries (2013) Inc.

3. 2015: CERTIFICATION MILESTONE: Shortly after the Red Chamber acquisition, in 2015, the North Lake facility earned BRC certification (British Retail Consortium), a significant standard in food safety. Additionally, it was nearing completion of its MSC Chain of Custody audit, reflecting a move to strengthen supply chain transparency.

4. RECENT OVERVIEW: Today, North Lake Fisheries (2013) Inc. operates two processing facilities—one in North Lake (Elmira) and another in Montague, PEI. The company specializes in wild-caught Atlantic lobster, snow crab, breaded fish fillets, and other value-added seafood products. These are processed primarily for export to global markets. It maintains key certifications such as HACCP, MSC, and BRC, which affirm its commitment to food safety, traceability, and sustainability.

CERTIFICATIONS AND SUSTAINABILITY STANDARDS

1. BRC Certification (British Retail Consortium)

In 2015, soon after being acquired by Red Chamber in 2013, the North Lake Fisheries lobster processing plant in PEI achieved BRC certification—a globally recognized standard for food safety—highlighting their commitment to high operational and hygiene standards in producing seafood products. They were also nearing completion of their MSC Chain of Custody audit at that time.

2. MSC Certification (Marine Stewardship Council)

Both of the company’s seafood-processing facilities—North Lake and Montague—are reported to be MSC-certified. This suggests they follow responsible practices in tracking and labeling seafood products that come from sustainable, wild-capture fisheries.

3. HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point)

The company adheres to HACCP standards—a systematic preventive approach to food safety that addresses biological, chemical, and physical hazards in production processes—applied across both their facilities.
